Quentin’s Client acquitted of 5 counts of Rape at Leeds Crown Court

Mr VC stood accused of Rape contrary to section 1 of the Sexual Offences Act 2003. He was accused of having raped his then girlfriend, both vaginally and anally on 5 separate occasions during their relationship.

VC was initially represented by solicitors but was unhappy with the service that they provided; he chose to change representation to instruct Quentin Hunt on a direct public access basis. The case was factually complicated and presented further challenges by a court finding that the complainant in the case was vulnerable and therefore pre-recorded evidence, including that cross examination was required to take place pursuant to 28 of the Youth Justice and Criminal Evidence Act 1999.

Quentin worked closely with VC and his family to carefully pick apart and expose the contradictions and inconsistencies in the Prosecution case. Mr VC was thoroughly prepared for the trial process, a large number of Defence witnesses were proofed and evidence was meticulously collected that went to undermine the prosecution case and bolster the case for the Defence.

The matter was eventually listed for trial at Leeds Crown Court; the trial lasted 5 days. During the trial, Quentin was able to deploy targeted cross examination of prosecution witnesses and present substantial Defence evidence to the jury in support of VC’s case. This meant that Quentin was able to deliver a powerful closing address to the jury in VC’s favour.

The approach was a success. The jury acquitted VC of all counts after only half a day’s deliberation. VC was obviously delighted with the result.
