Police grant Shotgun Licence after Quentin’s intervention
Mr BD applied for a shotgun certificate to Norfolk Police. This was refused on the basis that BD had lied on his application and that he had previous convictions which made him unsuitable to be a shotgun licence holder. The refusal was made under s30(C)(1) of the Firearms Act 1968.
BD appointed Quentin Hunt, a direct access Barrister and specialist shotgun licence lawyer to launch an appeal on his behalf.
Upon instruction Quentin took detailed instructions from BD and went about submitting an appeal notice to the Norwich Crown Court under s44 of the Firearms Act 1968. Quentin was of the view that if the grounds of appeal were fully explained to the Police properly then it was possible that they would allow BD to have a shotgun licence. This would therefore save his client the time, expense and stress of having to go through the full appeals process.
Quentin therefore drafted a long and detailed letter to the Firearms Licencing Manager working on behalf of the Chief Constable, explaining why their opposition to BD having a shotgun certificate was ill-founded and why BD would win any appeal.
A week or so later Quentin received a letter from the Firearms Licensing Unit that they had considered the representations and would not oppose BD being granted a shotgun certificate. BD was encouraged to apply for a fresh certificate which was duly granted.
In the circumstances Quentin did not need to pursue the appeal, saving his client considerable time and costs. The client was naturally very pleased with the outcome.
