Quentin Hunt was chosen to represent Mr SM, a prison governor who was accused of 3 counts of sexual assault upon a colleague at his workplace contrary to s3 of the Sexual Offences Act 2003. SM totally denied the allegations and consistently stated that they were untrue and malicious.
SM had initially chosen to work with solicitors and counsel but felt that he would benefit from a more personal approach to his representation, he therefore instructed Quentin Hunt to conduct his case on a direct public access basis.
The case was incredibly complicated and paper heavy as the matter had generated a large amount of paperwork through Trade Union, internal disciplinary and Employment Tribunal proceedings. The detail of the case and the shifting sands of the various accounts given by the complainant in the case appeared to Quentin to be the key to unlocking a favourable result.
Upon instruction, Quentin worked closely with the client to analyse thousands of pages of materials and substantial media evidence to best present his case. Quentin also approached a number of witnesses who were able to provide evidence to support the case, resulting in no fewer than six witnesses attending Court to give evidence on behalf of the Defence.
The matter reached trial at Reading Crown Court. Considerable legal argument needed to take place in respect of various issues relating to evidence and admissibility which were concluded favourably. Following extensive preparation Quentin was able to deploy considerable amounts of Defence material in an aggressive and comprehensive cross-examination of a complainant who was said to have been lying and manipulative. The Defence case was presented in a similarly meticulous way, outlining the various flaws in the Prosecution case.
The outcome was a resounding success. Following a 39-minute deliberation the jury returned unanimous verdicts of Not Guilty on all counts. SM was therefore free to continue his life without any stain on his character.
